How can bumblebees tell whose traces are on a flower?

A flower may look unchanged, yet to a bumblebee it may already carry traces of previous visits.

These traces are not writing or necessarily visible footprints, but scented substances left when the feet touch a surface.

Research described by the University of Bristol in 2017 found that bumblebees could distinguish several kinds of these scent marks.

In the experiments, researchers offered rewarding and unrewarding flowers carrying foot-scent marks from different sources.

Some bore the bee’s own scent, some that of sisters from its nest, some that of bees from another nest, and some were unmarked.

The bees could distinguish not only nest-mate scents from outsiders’ scents, but also their own traces from those of sisters in the same nest.

这(zhè)说明(shuō míng)它们(tā men)能(néng)利用(lì yòng)很(hěn)细(xì)的(de)气味(qì wèi)差别(chā bié),而(ér)不(bù)是(shì)只(zhǐ)判断(pàn duàn)花(huā)上(shàng)有(yǒu)没(méi)有(yǒu)任何(rèn hé)气味(qì wèi)。

This shows sensitivity to fine scent differences, rather than merely whether a flower has any scent mark at all.

研究者(yán jiū zhě)认为(rèn wéi),这(zhè)种(zhǒng)能力(néng lì)可能(kě néng)帮助(bāng zhù)它们(tā men)记住(jì zhù)最近(zuì jìn)去过(qù guò)的(de)花(huā),提高(tí gāo)寻找(xún zhǎo)食物(shí wù)的(de)效率(xiào lǜ)。

The researchers suggested that this ability could help them remember recently visited flowers and search for food more efficiently.

Distinguishing categories of traces does not mean knowing each unfamiliar bee’s identity, let alone calculating exactly how much nectar remains.

我们(wǒ men)眼中(yǎn zhōng)的(de)一片(yī piàn)花瓣(huā bàn),对(duì)熊蜂(xióng fēng)来说(lái shuō),还(hái)可能(kě néng)带着(dài zhe)值得(zhí dé)参考(cān kǎo)的(de)气味(qì wèi)线索(xiàn suǒ)。

A petal that seems plain to us may carry scent clues worth consulting for a bumblebee.
