Why can one ancient bell produce two tones?

Striking the same ancient bell in a different place may produce a tone of a different pitch, rather than simply make the same tone louder.

This happens with some ancient Chinese bronze bells.

钟(zhōng)没有(méi yǒu)换(huàn),大小(dà xiǎo)也(yě)没有(méi yǒu)变(biàn),为什么(wèi shén me)音高(yīn gāo)却(què)能(néng)改变(gǎi biàn)?

The bell has not been replaced or resized, so why can the pitch change?

First, look at the bell's opening: its cross section is not circular but resembles an almond with somewhat pointed ends.

This shape is more than decoration; it also affects how the bell vibrates.

敲钟(qiāo zhōng)时(shí),我们(wǒ men)听到(tīng dào)的(de)声音(shēng yīn)来自(lái zì)钟身(zhōng shēn)的(de)振动(zhèn dòng)。

When a bell is struck, the sound we hear comes from its vibrations.

The bell can vibrate in several different patterns, rather than move back and forth as a whole in just one way.

Researchers call these regular patterns of vibration vibrational modes.

In this noncircular structure, some modes occur in pairs whose two members have different vibration frequencies.

Frequency measures how fast something vibrates; it is related to the pitch of a sound.

Striking different places makes different vibration components more prominent, allowing different tones to stand out.

所以(suǒ yǐ),关键(guān jiàn)不(bù)只(zhǐ)是(shì)“敲(qiāo)得(de)有(yǒu)多(duō)重(zhòng)”,还有(hái yǒu)“敲(qiāo)在(zài)什么(shén me)地方(dì fāng)”。

The key is therefore not only how hard the bell is struck, but also where it is struck.

To investigate this mechanism, researchers studied a modern two-tone bell made in Suzhou.

他们(tā men)用(yòng)仪器(yí qì)测量(cè liáng)钟身(zhōng shēn)的(de)振动(zhèn dòng),并(bìng)用(yòng)全息(quán xī)干涉(gān shè)的(de)方法(fāng fǎ)观察(guān chá)振动(zhèn dòng)模态(mó tài)。

They used instruments to measure the bell's vibrations and holographic interferometry to observe its vibrational modes.

The researchers suggest that the pitches of these two tones appear to depend largely on the two lowest-frequency modes.

However, the bell's sound contains more vibration components, so the whole sound cannot be reduced to just two modes.

Modern experiments can help explain the sound of ancient bells, but this modern bell alone cannot reconstruct all the methods used by ancient craftspeople.

Likewise, the interval between the two tones cannot be assumed to be exactly the same for all ancient bells.

It turns out that a bell need not change size to reveal two different tones: its structure and the place where it is struck can do that.

Shape, vibration, and the point of the strike together provide the clues to this two-tone secret.
