How can one guitar string produce different notes?

Display options

When a guitar is played, the same string can produce different notes.

Look at the player's hand: the position where the string is pressed keeps changing.

他们(tā men)没有(méi yǒu)剪短(jiǎn duǎn)琴弦(qín xián),为什么(wèi shén me)还(hái)能(néng)让(ràng)音(yīn)变(biàn)高(gāo)?

They have not cut the string shorter, so how can they still make the note higher?

秘密(mì mì)在于(zài yú):整(zhěng)根(gēn)弦(xián)还(hái)那么(nà me)长(cháng),可以(kě yǐ)自由(zì yóu)振动(zhèn dòng)的(de)部分(bù fèn)却(què)变(biàn)了(le)。

The secret is that the whole string is still just as long, but the part that can vibrate freely has changed.

Vibration is back-and-forth motion; faster vibration generally produces a higher note.

This means the pitch of the sound, rather than how loud it is.

Pressing the string at a fret closer to the guitar's body shortens the part that can vibrate freely.

Fret positions are places along the guitar's neck used to produce different notes by pressing the string.

For the same string, with its tension almost unchanged, a shorter vibrating section gives a higher note.

However, a string's thickness and tension also affect its pitch.

When comparing different strings, therefore, length alone is not enough.

The fingers seem merely to press the string, but they also choose different vibrating lengths for that same string.
