Why do runners in outer lanes start further ahead?

When watching an outdoor 400-metre race, you will notice that the runners do not line up in a single row.

The further out the lane, the further ahead its starting point appears.

This is not intended to give outer-lane runners an advantage; it adjusts the distance each person has to run.

The track is not a straight line; it also has bends at both ends.

On a bend, the outer path is longer than the inner one.

If everyone started from the same line and ran a lap in their own lane, the outer-lane runners would have to cover an extra distance.

The outer starting points therefore need to move forward to remove that extra distance.

In a 400-metre race, runners must stay in their own lanes throughout.

Although the starting points differ, each runner has the same distance to cover to the finish.

So at the start of the race, you cannot judge who is running faster simply by seeing whose position is further ahead.

The outer-lane runner may simply have started further ahead.

Understanding these staggered starts reveals a small feature of track design.
