Was the yellow in green leaves there all along?

Display options

春天(chūn tiān)看(kàn)树叶(shù yè),我们(wǒ men)常常(cháng cháng)先(xiān)看到(kàn dào)绿色(lǜ sè)。

When we look at leaves in spring, green is often the first color we notice.

In autumn, however, some leaves become yellow or orange.

Are those colors only added in autumn?

Not necessarily: yellow and orange pigments may already be present while the leaf is still green.

Leaves contain a substance called chlorophyll, which is the main source of their green color.

When green is prominent, the other colors are hard to see.

秋天(qiū tiān)白天(bái tiān)变(biàn)短(duǎn),许多(xǔ duō)落叶树(luò yè shù)的(de)叶子(yè zi)不再(bù zài)制造(zhì zào)那么(nà me)多(duō)叶绿素(yè lǜ sù)。

As autumn days shorten, the leaves of many deciduous trees no longer produce as much chlorophyll.

原来(yuán lái)有(yǒu)的(de)叶绿素(yè lǜ sù)也(yě)逐渐(zhú jiàn)减少(jiǎn shǎo),绿色(lǜ sè)就(jiù)没有(méi yǒu)那么(nà me)明显(míng xiǎn)了(le)。

The chlorophyll already present also decreases gradually, making green less prominent.

这时(zhè shí),本来(běn lái)就(jiù)在(zài)叶子(yè zi)里(li)的(de)黄色(huáng sè)和(hé)橙色(chéng sè),就(jiù)更(gèng)容易(róng yì)被(bèi)我们(wǒ men)看见(kàn jiàn)。

The yellow and orange already in the leaves then become easier for us to see.

Red autumn leaves, however, do not necessarily involve the same process.

Some leaves form new red pigments in autumn.

A leaf changing color may therefore reveal an existing color, rather than add a new one.
