When you think of a pillow, do you picture something soft?

Yet some ancient pillows were made of ceramic.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has a Chinese ceramic pillow from the Tang dynasty.

It was made around the year 700 CE and has patterns in darker and lighter shades.

Were these patterns painted on with a brush?

For this pillow, the answer lies in the clay it was made from.

做(zuò)这种(zhè zhǒng)花纹(huā wén)时(shí),人们(rén men)先(xiān)把(bǎ)深色(shēn sè)和(hé)浅色(qiǎn sè)的(de)泥(ní)放(fàng)在(zài)一起(yī qǐ)。

To make this kind of pattern, people first put dark and light clay together.

再(zài)把(bǎ)它们(tā men)扭(niǔ)一(yī)扭(niǔ)、揉(róu)一(yī)揉(róu),让(ràng)两(liǎng)种(zhǒng)颜色(yán sè)混(hùn)在(zài)一起(yī qǐ)。

They then twist and knead the clays, mixing the two colors.

Next, they cut the clay into very thin slices and attach them to the pillow's surface.

The pattern is in this thin layer of clay; it does not run through the whole pillow.

A glaze is also applied on the outside, adding a layer of material over the surface.

After firing, the pattern remains on the surface.

Lines that look painted on can actually come from the clay itself.

这(zhè)只(zhī)小(xiǎo)枕头(zhěn tou),让(ràng)我们(wǒ men)看到(kàn dào)古人(gǔ rén)做(zuò)东西(dōng xi)时(shí)的(de)另(lìng)一(yī)种(zhǒng)办法(bàn fǎ)。

This little pillow shows us another way people in the past made things.
